Love Letter #25: The Heart Knows The Way

This quote popped into my mailbox this morning and my heart skipped a beat.

“I think if there’s something that you love and that serves your heart and it doesn’t make sense, that’s what you do. It takes tremendous courage to serve something that makes no sense, but feels like your heart’s desire.”

Martha Beck / Bewildered (Podcast) EP 69

Last week, I was interviewed for the Fierce & Feminine podcast with Melissa Harrison. The episode will air sometime in March. We had a great conversation about following one’s intuition and following our hearts desires.

At some point we talked about doing exactly what this quote suggests. Following your heart, even if it seems crazy. In my opinion, the crazier the better if it lights you up.

It does take courage to follow your heart and every single one of us has that courage. Courage doesn’t mean you’ve got it all figured out. It means you’re willing to take the first step on the journey, see what happens, and then take what feels like the next step.

Trust is the name of the game. To trust that when you take that first step, you’ll be okay no matter what, and then using the outcome to direct you to the next step on the path.

We often quit because we can’t see beyond this first step. But like driving a car at night, you keep going because you can see what’s right in front of you.

Most of my intuitive nudges have seemed crazy. But in my experience, when I follow them, things often turn out better than I could imagine – if I stay open to possibilities rather than scaring myself with worst case thoughts.

The heart and brain are often at odds with each other. Knowing this, and knowing how to manage those thoughts is how you actually get to following your heart.

Leaving a comfortable corporate job, selling a home I loved to live a freer lifestyle – crazy ideas that felt completely aligned for me.

Writing a year of love letters doesn’t make much sense either, even to me in some ways. I have no idea where this will take me, how this will unfold over time. But what I do know is it’s something I must do, and trust that something wonderful will come of is, even if I can’t see beyond today’s letter.

I would love to know what crazy nudge is tugging at your heart? Are you willing to take the first step?

With love,

Ready to take that first step? I’ll be with you every step of the way!
