Love Letter #142: The Thing That Isn’t Easy on You

I’m here to deliver some difficult news today…

…but it’s something we all need to hear.

The only thing that isn’t easy on you…is YOU.

It’s not your job or your boss, or the kids or your spouse, or what’s happening out in the world or life itself. Nope.

I know it can feel that way when we’re caught up in the demands of life.

But it’s really what we think about those demands, the people in our lives, and the things that are going on that make life feel hard.

We create our experience of the world.

It’s 60 degrees here today and sunny. I think it’s perfect. You may think it’s too cool. Someone else may think it’s too warm. None of that changes the temperature, just our experience of it. Do you see where this is going?

Life is always causing you to expand and evolve. You can’t change that and you can’t separate yourself from it. This is LIFE. And, I don’t know about you, but I’m here for all of it.

That wasn’t always the case. There was a time I used to say, “Life sucks and then you die”. Ugh…when I even think that now I cringe. And I also know that was where I was then. I’ve grown. Evolved. I’m learning to let Life have Its way because It knows how to live Itself. I simply need to get my “bloated nothingness” – (Thanks Emerson) – out of the way.

A lot of that bloated nothingness is learned patterns of perfectionism, doubt, and self-loathing. They all go hand in hand. When I think I have to be perfect, I doubt everything I do, and then I hate myself for it. Does this sound at all familiar to you?

When I remember that I am perfectly imperfect and always doing the best I can,  I am easy on myself. I trust that life is pointing me in the right direction and that I have the courage to make a choice. Often, we’re afraid to make the wrong choice, but any choice is actually better than no choice – because life will help you redirect if necessary.

No need to spend time ruminating about your choice…life has your back…if you can let go and allow it to support you. That’s the real test of self-confidence. Knowing you’ll be okay no matter what the outcome.

If you’re inclined to think that life is making you uneasy, lighten up and think again…because those thoughts are your dis-ease, and the good news is…thoughts can be changed.

With love,
