Groovy Pavement Ahead!

I recently went on a little road trip to New Hampshire. Fall in New England is quite spectacular, and this weekend did not disappoint. As we drove along the highway we came across the occasional construction area with the following sign; Caution – grooved pavement ahead. I understand the reasoning behind this sign and it also got me thinking about how we are programmed to live with caution. To live from a place of fear that something might go wrong rather than faith that life is always going right. I decided I want to change the sign to read; Get ready…groovy pavement ahead!

We might as well enjoy the ride

Maybe you, like me, learned it was best to live a cautious life, to be practical in all things. Plan for the worst and hope for the best. Living a life of cautiousness, always worrying about what might go wrong, keeps us from taking the risks necessary to be who we know we are – deep down – and do the things we dream of doing. We hesitate, procrastinate, and obstinate in the name of living safely, and ultimately living small.

Our words, our self-talk is very powerful. You can feel a difference just saying these two statements: ‘caution – grooved pavement ahead’ and ‘get ready, groovy pavement ahead’. Would you agree? The first is foreboding and the second invokes a sense lightness and anticipation. By changing our perspective and our language we create a different experience. We can still slow down and take our time as we travel over the groovy spots, but with a sense of adventure and wonder. We can enjoy this ride called life whether the pavement is smooth or groovy. Don’t we know – have faith – that the road will smooth out up ahead?

When you shift your perspective the life you are living changes

In my quirky way of thinking (which I love :-), groovy pavement means something good is coming, something new and better is taking shape. The roads I travel are being made new…and I love to travel! We all want life to be a smooth ride. So, when we hit the grooved or bumpy spots we think we went wrong or life has taken a wrong turn. What if we choose to see the bumps as groovy pavement? What if this is simply life under construction and something new and better is preparing to emerge?

I believe we live in a friendly universe. That life is fully supporting us in every moment. It’s we who resist life when we give way to fear and worry instead of living in faith and taking the groovy pavement as it comes. The next time you encounter grooved pavement on the road or in your life, I invite you to consider a shift in perspective. Get ready for groovy pavement ahead. Take the risk. Enjoy the ride.

From my heart to yours,
