Don’t Believe Everything You Think || Self Inquiry || Life Coaching

I’ve come to believe that to live our best lives we must question everything. Seriously. Everything. Everything we experience is a reflection of our thinking. Change your thinking, change your life, so the saying goes. Or as Byron Katie says, “Don’t believe everything you think.” Changing our thinking requires curiosity about what we’re thinking. How does that thought make me feel? Is it absolutely true? Is there a better feeling thought that could be just as true?

As I sat down to write this blog today, I was feeling stuck thinking that I had nothing to say. Huh…Imagine that. Nothing. To. Say. It’s doubtful that this is true. That feeling of being stuck leads me to want to take a nap (avoidance) or eat an entire sleeve of triple ginger cookies (distraction).  I sat at the computer telling myself, “I’m a blogger, I should have some great idea to write about”. Which only placed more pressure on me to write by ‘shoulding’ on myself and that leads to feeling more stuck and eating more cookies. You get the picture. Right?

So, I allowed myself to play with the idea and get curious about being stuck. I think of being stuck as a gummy bear. A big, honking, gummy bear staring me down, getting in the way of my work, doubting that my writing has any value which always translates into you’re not ‘good enough’ and who do you think you are. These are old scripts that I’ve learned to recognize (hopefully before I’ve eaten all the cookies…but not always, and that’s OK too). Old habits, old beliefs, die hard. Yet the more I learn to recognize them, the less power they have to keep me from my doing what feels right even if I have doubts. It’s just as true that I do have something to say. Here it is!

So, sweet friends, what is it you want to do or be in your life? What thoughts, beliefs could you call into question, get curious about, play with?  Einstein said, “Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life believing that it is stupid.” What are you believing about yourself that just might be keeping you from fully expressing your natural genius? Let’s get curious together and unlock yours.
