Resistance vs. Creativity: Where Is Your Energy Going?
Have you ever noticed how much energy you spend resisting things you don’t like? That frustrating situation at work, the habits of a loved one that drive you crazy, the circumstances in the world that feel out of your control—it’s easy to get caught in a cycle of pushing against what we don’t want. But here’s the thing: resistance is a fear-based activity.
When we resist something, we aren’t actually stopping it from existing. We’re feeding it. We’re giving it our energy and attention, and as a result, it grows. You’ve likely heard the saying, what you resist, persists. That’s because resistance is an act of engagement, even if it’s a negative one. Our focus fuels it and will exhaust us.
Now, imagine if all that energy went somewhere else.
What if, instead of resisting, we turned toward creativity?
Creativity as an Alternative to Resistance
Creativity is a heart-centered activity. Instead of fighting against something unwanted, creativity channels our energy into something we love, are curious about, or feel called to express. It moves us from contraction to expansion, from frustration to possibility. Creativity is energizing.
Where resistance says, I don’t want this, creativity asks, What do I want to create instead?
This isn’t just about artistic creativity—it applies to every area of life. If you’re frustrated with a situation at work, can you use your energy to create a solution instead of resisting the problem? If you’re tired of certain patterns in your relationships, can you create a new way of showing up rather than pushing against what isn’t working? If you’re overwhelmed by the state of the world, can you put your energy into creating change, rather than resisting what you oppose?
Creativity allows us to shift from victimhood to empowerment. It reminds us that while we may not always control circumstances, we do control how we engage with them.
So, here’s the question: Where is your energy going right now?
Are you spending your time resisting what you don’t want? Resistance can show up as worry, overthinking, or replaying situations in your mind—dwelling on how things should be or shouldn’t have happened. It keeps you stuck in a cycle of frustration, feeding energy into what you don’t want instead of creating what you do.
Or are you consciously directing your energy toward creating what you do want?
Instead of worrying, are you imagining new possibilities?
Instead of ruminating, are you taking small, inspired actions?
Instead of resisting what is, are you designing what could be?
Resistance feels heavy. Creativity feels expansive. One keeps us stuck in what we fear, the other opens us to what’s possible.
If you find yourself caught in resistance, pause and ask yourself:
- What am I resisting, and why?
- How is my energy feeding this situation?
- What could I create instead?
You have more power than you think. The energy you give to something determines whether it grows or fades. The choice is always yours: feed the resistance, or fuel the creation?
What will you choose today?
With love,
