Stories Run Deep

I was coaching a woman last week who has dreamed of going to Paris since she was a little girl. Not having been, she’d come to see herself as “the girl who adored Paris and never went.” Our stories run deep. This story was so deep that, up until our session, she hadn’t realized how she was resisting being “the woman who adored Paris and went”. She’s identified so deeply with her story, she believed it to be true. Stories run deep, and we all have them.

To become who we want to be, our old stories must die. Because these stories run deep, they become habit. We adopt them like children, we know them, we might even love them for what they bring us. Sympathy. A reason to not try because…we might fail, or worse we might succeed!

At any moment, we have two options: to step forward into greatness or step back into safety. ~Abraham Mazlow

We tell our stories over and over again to anyone who will listen and more harmfully to ourselves. Stories run deep and they provide the proof we need to argue for our limitations, as this client was. We hold onto them because, even though painful, they feel safe. Yet, they are the blinders that keep us from fulfilling our dreams, our desires, and recognizing our greatness…and going to Paris.

Letting go of these stories, our limiting beliefs, is the pathway to freedom. Much of the pain we are dealing with is really only thoughts, and thoughts can be changed. Like the caterpillar dissolving to become the butterfly, we must lose this old identity to find ourselves. We do this by taking full responsibility for the life we live and taking off the blinders so we can imagine all the possibilities awaiting us.

This client is happily writing a new story the way she wants it to be and I suspect she’ll get to Paris sooner than later. I’m curious about your story. What are you holding onto that is blinding you from living your best life? What are you willing to discover about yourself? Don’t you think it’s time you start telling the story the way you want it to be and set yourself free?
