What do you want to be when you grow up? Do you remember being asked this question? We ask it of kids all the time as though ‘grown up’ is a destination and then your life is complete. I was talking with a women the other day who is turning 40 and she said, “I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up”. I say…yeah!!! Good for you!!!

Because, growing up isn’t the point.

You and I are here for the adventure of living, to reveal more and more of of who we really are and that, dear heart, requires unlearning old ideas and beliefs we’ve learned about figuring life out and instead learning to welcome and embrace life as it is.

This doesn’t mean we don’t make plans and set goals. Those things are all important to give us a sense of direction. More importantly is to have a clear and potentially evolving intention around who (not what) we desire to be in this lifetime. This becomes our compass for navigating life no matter what situation or circumstance arises.

Rev. Michael Bernard Beckwith calls this Spiritual Maturity. When we stop blaming life for happening ‘to me’ and instead realize that life is created ‘by me’.

That child with dreams still lives within you.
